Happy Snapper, Or Naming Celebrities’ Pictures

Somehow I have been hooked on the pictures of “cute celebrity kids“, currently featuring on MSN.com. The kids of all ages, forms, genders and colours attend events, matches, are taken for a walk, or just sit on their parents’ lap. Although I tend to write about rather high-flown stuff, once in a while I do come down to earth and then I go through celebrity pics.

I perfectly understand the need and the urge to photograph a celebrity (especially if they are not alone). But if paparazzi could afford getting really close to the “body”, could they really not afford choosing the angle or the setting? Or, if it all came down to picture editor, a better title for the picture?

I am asking these questions as I am looking at the photograph titled “Kate Moss with daughter Lila Grace attend a wedding in London on June 21, 2008“. Although I do not know what wedding it was, I can tell in which part of London it was: the garbage bin bears a clear mark of “Southwark”. A garbage bin, you ask? Yes, Kate and daughter are snapped as they walk past a huge half-open garbage bin, filled with black bin bags. Naturally, perhaps, Lila Grace is not amused.

I have no idea who took the picture, but I feel MSN could do without including it in their trail of celebrity kids. Or, if they thought it was to be included at all costs, they could name it better. Of course, there is nothing wrong about a celebrity walking past garbage bins. At least since the Beatlemania celebrities have been eluding the paparazzi and the crowd through the windows and back doors, and god knows, how many garbage bins have seen those celebrity entries and exits. The problem is the message in the picture’s title. We are told the ladies attend a wedding, but they are actually walking past a garbage bin. It obviously would not be good to title the picture “Kate Moss and daughter walk past a garbage bin“, but it would be much better to say “Kate Moss and daughter are going to the wedding“.

In which case we would once again sympathise with celebrities who have to subject themselves to the unwholesome vapours of back entrances and side streets, in their vain attempt to escape an odd snapper.
